Part 2

Here is a new blog related coins in the name of Shahu Maharaj ?. In last blog we have observed coins in the name of shau in single dandi variety, and here will have look at the coins having legend  “Saav”and “Saavaa” instead of “Shau ?”, in single line variety. Because of unusual legends we can’t attribute these coins to any particular ruler.

Ø  Shri/Raja/Saav & Chatra/Pati.

it is found that sometimes Aurangazeb have called Shahu maharaj as Saav. Coins with legend Saav are scare to get with full legend. These coins weighs in between 8-10 grams, showing legend Shree/Raja/Saav on obverse and Chatra/Pati on Reverse, sometimes “chetra” is also observed instead of “Chatra” but its seen largely on “double dandi” type coins. half units of “Saav” are also available, they weighs in between 4-7 grams.

Ø  Shri/Raja/(Saavaa or Shavaa )  & Chatra/Pati.

here is a another variety of legend “Saavaa” or “Shaavaa”. This variety of legend is rarely seen. Maximum times “vaa” of “saavaa” does not come on flan so it becomes hard to read legend correctly. On this coin Raja/Saavaa or Shaavaa can be read on obverse and chatra/pati on reverse of the coin.

Coins in the name of Shahu Maharaj

Part 1

In the last blog we have seen perfect specimens of Coins in the name of Raja ram maharaj. Here we are discussing about the varieties and types of coins bearing name Shau ! we have observed Shau, Sau, Saav legends instead of Shau on obverse, and also different symbols can be seen on the coins bearing name shau.

Actually in shau coins we have two different types, Single line Shau and Double line Shau. In this first blog of Shau will discuss about Single line shau.

By the name Shahu two rulers ruled from Satara family Shahu 1^st- (1708-1748 AD) and Shahu 2^nd- (1777 to 1808 AD) and one ruler ruled from Kolhapur family i.e. from 1883-1922 AD. As three rulers ruled by the same name it is very hard to know the exact ruler from these coins.

 In 1708 Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj s/o Sambhaji maharaj became king. We have seen the coins of Shivaji maharaj, Sambhaji maharaj and Rajaram Maharaj all these coins have a single line on them below shree, as shahu maharaj have ruled after Sambhaji Maharaj so it is possible to that the coins with the single line variety can be of Shahu maharaj 1^st who ruled from 1708-1748 AD.

Here will discuss about the same coin with Single line type.

For better understanding here I am presenting the image of original coin as well as edited.

This is the 1 paisa coin in the name of Shahu Maharaj with legend Shree/Raja/Shau on obverse and Chatra/Pati on reverse. These coins weighs from 9-10.5 gm approx. these type coin bear legend raja shau with single line after shree and not double line (Dudandi).

Half paisa is also seen in these type coin, below presenting half paisa coins in the name of Shahu Maharaj.

here is the example of Shau Half paisa coin. This coin weighs 5.16 gm. This is also the same single line type coin with legends Shree/ Raja/ Shuau on obverse and Chatra/ Pati on reverse.

So these coins can be considered to be minted by Shahu maharaj 1^st son of Sambhaji Maharaj, but as we are not having any strong evidence to prove it we can only guess !

Coins of Rajaram Maharaj #3

In last post we have seen three specimen of Chatrapati Rajaram maharaj shivarai. Here now we are going to see some more Exellent specimens of rajaram coins, as we have told u in last post that till now we were having rajaram coins only in square shape but now one specimen we got with round shape, in this post we are presenting that specimen. In this post we are looking at the most beautiful and exellent specimens of rajaram coins. 

Here firstly we are looking at the specimen from Mr Vijay Hiran.

                                         

On this coin on obverse side we are able to see shree/raja/ra(m), and on reverse we can see Chatra/Pati in two lines, kindly check the reverse calligraphy of rajaram coins, all coins calligraphy looks similar to each other. On this coin on reverse there is a symbol on ‘Chatra’, but we are not able to identify that symbol surely.

Now we will see the 5th specimen from Mr.Vijay Hiran. we have made a drawing of a full legend of rajaram coin.

This is a one of the best specimen of rajaram coin with somewhat square shape. On this coin we have (Shree)/ (Ra)ja/ (r)am on obverse with only ‘Ja’ and ‘Ma’ on flan, and Chatra/pati on reverse side, with half dotted border.

This is the 6th rajaram coins specimen from Mr.Vinaykumar Chumble. we have made a drawing of a full legend of this coin.

This is also one of the best example of rajaram coin. On this coin on obverse (shree)/(Raj)a/(Ra)m is visible, the best thing of this specimen is ‘M’ of ‘Ram’ is fully visible on this coin. And on reverse there is Chatra/Pati within Dotted borders.

Next 7th and the most Exellent specimen is from Mr.Ameya Gokhale’s Collection. This is the Best coin Of Rajaram maharaj we have yet. we have made a drawing of a full legend of rajaram coin.

On this coin on obverse (shree)/Raja/Ram is fully visible, the best thing of this specimen is ‘Ram’ is fully visible on this coin with Raja word. And on reverse there is Chatra/Pati within Dotted borders.

Coins of Rajaram Maharaj #2

In last post we have seen the information and one specimen of Chatrapati Rajaram maharaj shivarai. Here now we are going to see more good specimens of rajaram coins, actually till now we were having rajaram coins only in square shape but now one specimen we got with round shape.  

Here firstly we are looking at the specimen from Mr.shriharsh Waghrulkar. He have tried to make a drawing of a full legend of rajaram coin. Coin no-2

On this coin on obverse side we are able to see shree/raja clearly but unfortunately ram is out of flan here, but here good thing is ‘shree’ is clear on this coin which we don’t get on the coins which comes with the word ‘ram’ on the flan, but as the ram is not on the flan so how we can say that this is rajaram coin? Actually we have no proof to prove that but by comparing calligraphy of rajaram coins we can say. As per my observation, the rajaram coins which I have seen yet are with the same reverse calligraphy, and this coin also have the same calligraphy as other rajaram coins have, so from that we can say that this coin is of rajaram maharaj.

Now we will see the 3^rd specimen from Mr.Ramesh Koli. He have also tried to make a drawing of a full legend of rajaram coin. Coin no-3

This is also a good specimen of rajaram coin with somewhat square shape, we can compare calligraphy of this specimen and a specimen we have seen earlier with ram out of flan, especially ‘chatra’ on reverse, its looking same. On this coin we have (Shree)/ (Ra)ja/ (Ra)m on obverse with only ‘Ja’ and ‘Ma’ on flan, and Chatra/pati on reverse side.

Now we will see the specimen from Mr.Vijay Hiran. i myself have tried to make a drawing of a full legend of rajaram coin. this coin we have seen in our last blog but their was no drawing of legend so posting it again, for information purpouses.

as we have seen earlier, On this specimen we can see “(shree)/(r)aja/(R)am" on obverse of this coin, and “chatra/pati” on reverse within dotted border. 'shree' is out of flan here.

We have seen two new specimens of rajaram coins in this post and three specimens yet, more excellent specimens and their information will be shared in the next post.
